Dice games are a perfect solution! They’re simple to play, require minimal equipment, and can entertain tweens, teens and adults alike. Grab a set of dice and check out these five engaging dice games for all ages.
1. Farkle
Players: 2 or more
What You Need: 6 dice, a piece of paper for scoring
Farkle is a classic game of risk and reward! Players roll six dice and earn points based on combinations such as three of a kind or straights. You can keep rolling to increase your score—but beware, if you don’t roll a scoring combination, you lose all points from that turn! The first player to reach 10,000 points wins.
Instructions:
Roll all six dice.
Score points by rolling combinations (e.g., 1 = 100 points, 5 = 50 points, three of a kind, or straights).
Decide whether to roll again to add to your score or stop and bank your points.
If you roll and don’t score any points, you “Farkle” and lose your points for that turn.
First player to reach 10,000 points wins.
2. Tenzi
Players: 2 or more
What You Need: 10 dice per player
Tenzi is a fast-paced game where players roll their dice simultaneously, trying to get all ten to show the same number. Once you match all ten, shout “Tenzi!” to win. To add variety, try different versions like “Splitzi” (get five of one number and five of another) or “Towerzi” (stack your dice as you match them).
Instructions:
Each player rolls their 10 dice at the same time.
Choose a number to aim for (e.g., all 6s).
Keep any dice that match your target number and roll the rest.
Repeat until all your dice match the target number.
First to finish shouts “Tenzi!” and wins.
3. Beat That!
Players: 2 or more
What You Need: 2 or more dice, paper for scoring
In this simple game, each player takes turns rolling two dice. The goal is to create the highest two-digit number possible by combining the dice. For example, if you roll a 4 and a 6, your number is 64. Players take turns, and the highest number in a round wins a point. Play up to 10 points to determine the champion!
Instructions:
Each player rolls two dice on their turn.
Combine the numbers to make the highest two-digit number possible (e.g., 6 and 4 = 64).
Highest number for the round earns 1 point.
Play until someone reaches 10 points.
4. Pig
Players: 2 or more
What You Need: 1 die, paper for scoring
Pig is a great game of luck and strategy. Players take turns rolling a die as many times as they like, aiming to reach 100 points. However, if you roll a 1, you lose all points accumulated that turn and your turn ends. You can “hold” to bank your points at any time, but deciding when to stop is the tricky part!
Instructions:
On your turn, roll the die and add the number to your total score.
Keep rolling as many times as you want to add points.
If you roll a 1, you lose all points from that turn and your turn ends.
Decide whether to “hold” (bank your points) or risk rolling again.
First to reach 100 points wins.
5. Yahtzee
Players: 2 or more
What You Need: 5 dice, Yahtzee scorecards
This family favourite is all about rolling dice combinations to score points. Each player has 13 turns to achieve categories like three of a kind, full house, or the elusive Yahtzee (five of a kind). With elements of strategy and chance, it’s a game that keeps everyone on their toes.
Instructions:
Roll all five dice on your turn.
Choose which dice to keep and which to re-roll (up to two more rolls per turn).
Aim for combinations like three of a kind, full house, or Yahtzee (five of a kind).
Record your score on the scorecard in one of 13 categories.
After all players have filled their scorecards, the highest total wins.
